Celebrating World Tourism Day 2021 – Tourism for Inclusive Growth

27th September 2021

World Tourism Day on September 27th is a day dedicated to fostering the awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value and the vital contribution that the sector can make towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals. World Tourism Day was designated by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in September 1979, with the commemoration to commence in 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970.

This year’s theme is Tourism for Inclusive Growth and this theme encourages the opportunity to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that behind every number, there is a person. As we celebrate the restarting of tourism and travel around the world following the Covid-19 pandemic, it is especially important to recognize the value of tourism and the meaningful connections travel enables for people around the world. Leading with exceptional hospitality and bringing people together to celebrate personalized exploration and unique once-in-a-lifetime experiences is at the forefront of Villa Hotels & Resort’s mission.

While the pandemic has hit the travel industry particularly hard, there are hopeful signs that travel businesses are slowly but surely getting back on their feet. The Maldives reopened its boarders on July 15th 2020, and since then the restarting of tourism in the Maldives has helped kick start the economy and support the rebuilding of communities. In keeping with the World Tourism Day theme, the UNWTO has urged tourists, businesses, sister UN agencies, as well as both, member states and non-members, to raise awareness about tourism’s immense potential to uplift those who have been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. As the world continues to reopen with a new normal in place, it is evident that although world tourism has restarted, the concept of travel around the world has completely changed.

Villa Hotels & Resorts celebrates this important day and pledges commitment to the growth of tourism and the benefits it can yield in the Maldives and worldwide. While supporting the restarting of tourism, the company wishes to highlight the importance of sustainable travel. As modern and innovative eco resorts, Villa Hotels & Resorts are proud of the nature-friendly initiatives and various conservation programs at the collection of Maldives resorts. To preserve the natural island locations and fragile environment, great care is taken to respect the ecological balance. In light of the tourism industry restarting, Villa Hotels & Resorts strive to lead with example on the importance of sustainable travel and achieving best practices of environmental and social sustainability.
