Papaya (Falho)
A papaya tree or carica papaya ( coming from caricaceae
family) can be spotted by its soft, greenish and hollow trunk topped with
many spiraled, umbrella-like clusters of large leaves bearing pear shaped fruit. It comes from You may easily spot them while you take a hike along the
roads in Sun Island. In the wild, papaya trees are either male or female.
Occasionally, the male plant will bear flowers setting into fruit but
usually the female bears the fruit. Plants sometimes begin flowering within
3 to 4 months from seed and will fruit for 2 to 3 years. The fruit's ripe
flesh is sweet and pulpy. In Sun Island it is used in desserts, salads,
juices, and served as a wonderful breakfast melon. In Maldives it is used to
cook savory dishes such as curry and a special dish called “Falho Murubba”
where the pieces of young ripe fruit is cooked in sugar syrup.
