Screwpine (Maa / Boa Kashikeyo )
Screw Pine belongs to Pandanaceae (screw pine family). Sun
Island has two varieties of this tree. One which bears a small fruit ( not
edible) and the other with a larger fruit which is edible. Its male flowers
have a sweet, perfumed odour that has a pleasant quality similar to rose
flowers, but is fruitier, and is used in north India for flavoring sweets.
In the ancient days maldivian lovers used to write love letters on its white
petals using an iron stylus. It’s larger fruits, pink and pulpy flesh are
scraped (liyun, scraping or removal of its pulp using a special knife) and
consumed raw by the Maldivians or along with tender scraped coconut and
sugar or sometimes boiled as a thick porridge. The seeds of larger fruits
are dried, and then cut open to consume its seeds.
