Jasmine (Huvandhu Maa)
Jasmine or Jasminum grandiflorum is also known as Spanish
Jasmine. It is a climbing
shrub , quite a tropical-looking vine, which grows up to three meters high.
The stems grow quickly to 10-20’ long but are easily controlled by pruning.
Lining them are shiny, deep green, 5- to 7-parted leaves. The leaves are
made up of three or four pairs of leaflets and a terminal leaflets. The
flowers are grouped in terminal inflorescences. They are white, slightly
rose-colored along the outside and especially in the bud, and form a long
odoriferous tube. Its fragrant blossoms have a fresh, flowery, and delicate
odor .In the resort it is used as an essential oil in aroma therapy. It is
said that a ton of flowers is needed to obtain one kilo of Jasmine absolute.
The scent of jasmine is widely used in the perfume industry particularly in
women's products, to make perfumed bouquets, and as a decorative plant in
the gardens. In the Maldives the flowers are used to make “Maafen” (scented
water) and used in flavoring many sweet puddings or custards. Surprisingly
you may find these absolutely fragrant blossoms in your rooms.
