Guettarda Speciosa (Uni)
Guettarda speciosa comes from rubiaceae family. This
magnificent tree is very common
on all the atolls where it grows wild. This is a small tree with dark green
leaves,20-25 cm. long, usually blunt, but sometimes acute at the end. The
leaf narrows at the base and broadens toward the tip. The midrib and 7-10
pairs of lateral nerves are prominent. The small, white, tubular flowers are
2.5-5 cm. long and grow from the leaf axils. The fruit is rounded, faintly
ribbed and about 1.5 cm. in diameter. Its flowers are without doubt the most
fragrant in the island, but, unfortunately, they last a very short time and
are very sensitive to too much sun. It is therefore, at night or better just
before dawn that one can best appreciate the heady perfume of these small
white flowers. You may find a lot of these flowers in Sun Island and
sometimes you may see them in your room.
