Annona Glabra (Kalhuhuthu
Meyvaa)
Annona glabra, also known as pond apple or alligator apple
come form L., Annonaceae family. A semi-deciduous tree which is usually 3-8
m high, the trunk narrowly buttressed at the base, leaves oblong-elliptical,
and 7-15 cm long, up to 6 cm broad. In its beautiful flowers, sepals are
long and broad, outer petals are cream-colored with a crimson spot at base
within and inner petals shortly clawed, and whitish outside, dark crimson
within, where its stigmas are sticky, deciduous. Its fruit are up to 12 cm
long, 8 cm broad, yellow outside when ripe, pulp pinkish-orange, rather dry,
pungent-aromatic. Its seeds are light brown. The hard seeds can remain
viable for considerable periods in either fresh, brackish or sea water. A. glabra can act as a 'freshwater or brackish water mangrove' as it can
survive root immersion at high tide and prolonged freshwater flooding.
Seedlings require sufficient soil moisture and sunlight to survive. The
fruit is made in to juice; some says that it has a noble taste. You will
find a lot of these trees in Sun Island.
