White-breasted water hen (Kanbili)
White-Breasted Waterhen or Amaurornis phoenicurus (A.p.maldivus)
is
also known as “kanbili” in Maldives. Their name is originated from their
white colored front. It’s about 33cm long, and the dorsal component of the
bird from its top to the tip of its tail is greenish-gray, as are its wings.
Their lower abdomens and the area below their tails are reddish-orange;
their beaks, legs, and feet are yellowish-brown; the base of their upper
bill is crimson; and their face, forehead and abdomen are white. The
plumage, beaks, legs, and feet of chicks, however, are flawless black. Their
"ku-ku" call is loud. They feed primarily on water or marine insects, trees
and weeds. They are lonely birds commonly found nesting in shrubs or bushes
near water, and in swamps. Females lay three eggs and normally raise three
chicks every year. They have outsized feet that permit them to walk through
water and mud, and they usually walk. When walking, their tail feathers tend
to point upward. A shy and cautious bird, they will quickly rush into thick
bushes for security when disturbed. Although able to fly when necessary,
they usually only glide along at slow speeds for a few meters before quickly
landing because of their huge, heavy feet. When flying, their necks are
outstretched and their legs are left dangling. White-breasted water hens are
usually spotted alone near swampy areas. You will see a lot of them in Sun
Island. Don’t be scared they are very friendly. You may get an occasional
visit of one of them while you are at the restaurant.
