Island Flying Fox (Vaa)
Another interesting inhabitant of the island is the fruit bat
or the island
flying fox. In the early dawn and dusk you will be able to see a lot of
fruit bats. They live largely on fruits like, papaya. Don’t be scared we
have no vampires and there has never been any case as such. Our most common
bat is the little fruit bat. The Island Flying Fox has a wing-span of a
little over approximately three feet ,and weighs about one and a half pounds
( 750 g ).There are 16 sub species of this bat, the most endangered being
P.h. maris ( limited distribution ) found on the Maldives. Island flying fox
has a gestation of approximately 120 - 180 days and produce one pup.
