House Gecko (Hoanu)
House Gecko or “Hoanu” as it’s called in Maldives is a
harmless and fast moving
small lizard. You will find them near the lights on the walls, especially
outside the room, in the verandah. They have a granular scaly skin that
appears at times, to be transparent. It‘s average size is 3”, mainly
yellowish brown to beige with darker blotches, some have stripes running
along the upper flanks. They like the warmth of the light but at the same
time they wait for many different types of insects that come near the light.
They won’t bite you or come closer to you. The female gecko lays two hard
shelled eggs. Eggs hatch between 50-65 days. Hatchlings measure about 2”.
